THE SONG OF THE SPRINGS

The springs sing of how the soul naturally flows with praise for its Creator.

[Song 10] Springs (Ch. 1)

מַעְיָנוֹת אוֹמְרִים. וְשָׁרִים כְּחֹלְלִים כָּל מַעְיָנַי בָּךְ: (תהילים פז ז)

The Wellsprings are saying: “And as singers who are like dancers are all those who study you.”

Commentary

This song depicts the glory of the offerings in the Bais Hamikdash. Then, the
Levites would sing to the music of flutes and other instruments. King David
declared about this, “All my wellsprings are for You!” These compositions
emerged from his heart, which he describes as an overflowing spring of praise for
the Creator.
Spring water flows upwards, out of the ground, contrary to the usual gravitational
effect. So too, one’s soul yearns for its source, heavenwards. When it sings to
Hashem, it connects with Him. We have but to follow our souls’ natural desires in
order to come close to Hashem.

LIVING WITH THE SONG

The rivers and the springs are actually opposites of each other. The rivers flow downhill and the spring fountains
upward from underground sources. They sing to rejoice in the will of Hashem no matter what the situation.
The Midrash says that the Jewish people are compared to a well. Just like a well springs forth new waters all of the
time, so too the Jewish people sing to God all of the time. From this, one should realize that it is fitting at all times
and occasions to sing to God. (Likutei Maamarim.)
Just like spring water is the healthiest because it is never still, so too it follows that a Jew who is always thanking
and blessing his Creator is pure and refined.
Never stop working on improving the quality of your Davening and Brachos. Prayer is one of the four things that
require constant strengthening. To praise God is not hard. It is easy and pleasurable, the natural expression of the
Jewish soul.
