THE SONG OF THE GRASS

Grasses sing that Hashem’s world is only beautiful when each being lives according to its individuality.

[Song 32] Grass (Ch. 3)

דְּשָׁאִים אוֹמְרִים. יְהִי כְבוֹד יי לְעוֹלָם יִשְׂמַח יי בְּמַעֲשָׂיו: (תהילים קד לא)

The Grasses are saying, “May the kavod of Hashem endure forever; may Hashem rejoice in his works.”

Commentary

When Hashem beautified the face of His world with a diversity of grass species,
each sprouted individually and distinctively, even though they had not been
commanded to not intermingle. Thereupon, the ministering angel sang, “Let the
glory of Hashem be forever, let Hashem rejoice in His handiwork.”
Each person should to live his life without comparing with others. Simply by
fulfilling the unique role Hashem has designed for you, Hashem’s glory is
revealed and He rejoices in His handiwork. Each Jew is a player in our national
symphony orchestra, a singer of praise to the Creator. Each has to read the notes
and play the part that nobody else is going to play for him.

LIVING WITH THE SONG

Like the humble foliage that covers the earth, each person has to live a life of individuality and self-pride. There
is nothing ordinary in that which was fashioned by Hashem Himself. Each person is afforded his own setup of
divine service and he is expected to give it his best. Nothing superhuman is asked for; it would even be out of
place. Each is like a player in a national symphony orchestra, a singer of praise to the Creator. Just read your notes
and play your part that nobody else is going to play for you.
If everyone would play his part and not look left and right to see if others are also doing so, the deafening musical
performance would awaken the redemption.
