THE SONG OF THE DAY

The day sings of how Hashem’s world and praise are revealed in it.

[Song 11] Day (Ch. 2)

יוֹם אוֹמֵר. יוֹם לְיוֹם יַבִּיעַ אֹמֶר וְלַיְלָה לְּלַיְלָה יְחַוֶּה דָּעַת: (תהילים יט ג)

The Day is saying: “Day to day utters speech, and night to night relates knowledge.”

Commentary

In the earth’s daylight hours, Hashem’s creations and doings are visible to us
and we constantly bless Him, each day anew. Nights serve to separate the days
and give recesses for contemplation and absorption, important because an
unending day would result in mental overload. Day by day, our experiences and
comprehension of Hashem increases and so does our praise.
Each day is a new creation. Count your blessings, thank Hashem, and let each
day sing its own song.

LIVING WITH THE SONG

Day and night include each other in their songs, implying that they are interrelated. The day says how by daylight
Hashem is revealed to us and we constantly bless Him, whereas by night, when we cannot see, we nevertheless
use the peace of mind that night affords to comprehend what we discovered that day. 1 This is also the purpose
of sleep and the cause of dreaming. This is the meaning of the phrase “day by “day”. Were time to be one long
day people would collapse from overload. Even if they had sufficient stamina, the knowledge acquired in the
everlasting day would be unsettled. Hashem therefore created individual days separated by night periods of
contemplation and absorption for ordered intellectualization. About this sings each day.
